01What the hand-eye coordination test is

A hand-eye coordination test for pilots is a psychomotor task: it puts an unstable object under your control and measures how precisely you can hold it on a target. The classic format — the one AIVR CADET recreates — is a ball on a domed plate. You tilt the plate to keep the ball centred while wind and turbulence constantly try to push it off. It is a form of compensatory tracking, the same control loop you use to hold an aircraft steady.

The task looks simple and is deceptively hard. The ball is heavy, so it responds with a lag; the dome wants to feed it outward once it drifts; and the wind is never constant. Success is not about fast reflexes — it is about reading the disturbance early and answering with the smallest correction that works.

02Why coordination is tested in cadet selection

Hand-flying an aeroplane is continuous compensatory tracking. You make constant small corrections to hold attitude, heading and altitude against gusts, trim changes and your own inputs. A cadet with good coordination develops stable "hands" quickly in training; a cadet who over-controls chases the aircraft, over-corrects, and takes far longer — or washes out.

Because this motor skill is hard to fake and strongly predicts training progress, airlines keep a psychomotor module in almost every aptitude battery. It is one of the purest signals of raw flying aptitude they can collect on the ground.

03What the module actually measures

The coordination module scores several distinct qualities at once — it is not just "did you keep it on centre":

Radial error
How close to centre you keep the ball over the whole run — your core accuracy against the wind.
SMOOTHNESS
Control quality
How jerky your inputs are. Smooth, anticipatory control scores high; frantic high-gain corrections are penalised even if the ball stays roughly centred.
STABILITY
Disturbance rejection
How well you recover after a gust without over-shooting the other way — reading the disturbance instead of reacting late.
CONSISTENCY
Hold under rising load
The wind ramps up through the assessment; your grade reflects whether your control holds together as it gets harder.

04Why smoothness beats speed

The single most important lesson: do less, sooner. On a heavy, lagging plant, big fast inputs create oscillation — you push, the ball overshoots, you push back, and now you are fighting yourself. The scoring deliberately penalises this because a real aircraft behaves the same way. The candidates who grade A learn to feel the lag, apply a small input early, and let the ball settle instead of chasing it.

This is exactly why practice helps so much. You are not building reflexes — you are retraining your instinct to grab, replacing it with patience and small, confident corrections. That change transfers directly to the flight deck.

05How to prepare — a 4-step plan

Learn the plant.

Accept that the ball is heavy and lags. Your job is anticipation, not reaction — small inputs early, not big inputs late.

Drill the module free.
